14/03/2020, Banglore: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to repair the damaged valve instead of removing the old, damaged valve. In this innovative surgical technique, a replacement valve is wedged into the aortic valve's place.

Before the invention of this surgical technique, valve replacement was a critical surgical procedure that required open-heart surgery. Valve replacement through an open heart surgery was the only option to treat the patients suffering from Severe Aortic Stenosis. But considering the complexity, many patients are denied this option due to their advanced age, malfunctioning in the left ventricle, and so on. With the innovation of cutting edge surgical technique TAVI or TAVR, valve replacement for such patients has become feasible now.

TAVI/TAVR procedure in India is an extremely effective option for patients suffering from Severe Aortic Stenosis with symptoms. Previously, this was too dangerous to replace the valve for those patients with standard Valve Replacement Surgery.

In this minimally invasive surgical procedure, the valve replacement is done without removing the old, diseased valve. The replacement procedure is quite similar to a stent placement procedure in an artery. Here in the TAVR approach, the surgeon delivers a fully collapsible replacement valve to the damaged valve site through a catheter. After placement in the exact location, the new valve expands and that pushes the old valve leaflets out of the way. Now the active tissue in the replacement valve takes over the job of controlling blood flow through arteries.

TAVI or TAVR is a minimally invasive surgical procedure conducted to relieve patients with a critical condition like Aortic Stenosis. This surgical procedure offers quicker recovery and a high success rate over conventional open-heart surgery. The surgeons conduct the surgery through smaller incisions that lead to less amount of blood loss, lowered chances of infections, and less pain. Being a very sophisticated technology, it offers assured and much safer outcomes.

In last few years, India has emerged as a desired destination to patients looking for affordable, accessible and efficient TAVI / TAVR Treatment in India. The reasons behind such demand are the development of state-of-the-art private and public sector healthcare facilities, medical insurance, reasonable treatment cost, and the ease of access to quality healthcare services.
