17/06/2019, Delhi: Sickle Cell Anaemia or Sickle cell disease is a type of inherited genetic disorders that causes deformation of haemoglobin. In the case of sickle cell anaemia, the regular haemoglobins (Haemoglobin A) are replaced with deformed haemoglobin (haemoglobin S) which causes a change in the regular round shape of red blood cells. The red blood cells (RBC) become sickle or crescent moon shaped, very stiff, rigid and sticky. These irregularly shaped, sticky red blood cells get clustered together and stuck in small blood vessels, which can slow down or block the normal blood flow. As a result, the oxygen supply to different body parts of the body gets hammered.
In the case of sickle cell diseases, a rapid loss of red blood cells take place as the longevity of a sickle-shaped RBC is very short, only 10 – 20 days.
