Calgary, Alberta: Redevelopment of Deerfoot City promises to change the way consumers enjoy their shopping experience. Vancouver based Shape properties  purchased the property from Ivanhoe Cambridge in 2011. Redevelopment plans will almost double the leasable area to more than 1.1 million square feet at an undisclosed cost.

Viewed by many as a dated shopping mall, Shape Properties had the vision to see it’s potential. According to executive vice president of development and design Darren Kwiatkowski “ This includes it’s strategic location, the size of the property, great exposure, access and egress. When we purchased Deerfoot Mall, we looked beyond the shopping center and at the potential for a future mixed plan.”

The worldwide shift from traditional Shopping Centers and a trend towards vibrant social destinations with a large outdoor component and diverse mix of uses is changing the way we view shopping centers.

Speaking on behalf of Shape Properties Darren Kwiatkowski said “ We saw an opportunity to change Calgary’s shopping, dining and entertainment experience The future of retail brings the energy of urban street fronts with a thoughtfully laid out design of a master planned community.”

While there is a strong retail presence in the Calgary market the redevelopment of Deerfoot Mall is a different format. So what will what could be described as a destination experience offer residents of Calgary? Visit any Mall and you may notice more people in the Food Courts meeting friends for coffee or having lunch or dinner. The landscape of Malls has changed over the last few years with other services beyond retail shopping being the focus.

Imagine restaurants, including fine dining, the gym, grocery shopping and entertainment facilities in one location. People’s lives are so busy they are looking for convenience when doing everything for shopping to booking appointments right up to movie to dinner at a high end restaurant.

The move towards offering these conveniences in one location is led in part by Cineplex Entertainment and it’s 50,000 square foot Rec Room being the first to market social and entertainment concept, with one location already open in Edmonton.

Phase one tenants and The Rec Room are now open. The Deerfoot City rec Room which is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2017 will include an area with an assortment of amusement games and interactive feature attractions alongside recreational activities like pool. Shuffleboard and ping pong; multiple dining options; a multi level patio with outdoor fireplace & bocce ball courts; a bar with a large high definition screen; an auditorium style space for live entertainment including comedy and musical acts.

Additionally Deerfoot City’s “ convenience zone “ will include familiar names such as Booster Juice, Freshii, Quiznos, McDonalds and Tim Hortons alongside key service providers like Rogers Plus, Telus, Lenscrafter, Oasis Medical House and Dr Wilson and Associates Optometrists.

Dr. Alex G. Wilson & Associates Optometry clinic as one of the previous tenants has been recently undergone renovations as part of the redevelopment plan. With our Deerfoot Mall location set to reopen this April, we welcome our patients and new patients to visit our newly renovated premises.
