19/09/2019, Delhi: Sickle Cell Anemia is one the lethal genetic disorders that can be transmitted to the next generation causing deformed haemoglobin and eventually a deficiency of RBC. In the case of sickle cell anaemia, the regular haemoglobins (Haemoglobin A – cause sound shape of the RBC) are switched with deformed haemoglobin (haemoglobin S). As a result, the shape of the red blood cells (RBC) become sickle or crescent moon shaped, which are very stiff, rigid and sticky. These irregularly shaped, sticky RBCs get clustered together and stuck within small blood vessels and causes slow blood flow or blocks the blood flow completely. Consequently, the oxygen supply to different body parts of the body gets hammered. On the other hand, the longevity of a sickle-shaped RBC is only 10 – 20 days, which is very short than normal RBC. This rapid loss of red blood cells cannot be fulfilled subsequent as a human body is not able to product RBC so frequently. As a result, the patient suffers from a deficiency of red blood cells in the blood which causes the symptom called anemia.

Till date, bone marrow or stem cell treatment is the only recognized sickle cell anemia treatment in India. In the case of a bone marrow transplant, the diseased bone marrow is replaced with a healthy bone marrow from a donor or externally grown from patients own stem cells. This newly implanted bone marrow boosts the growth of new marrow, which eventually produce enough red blood cells, platelets, or white blood cells to rid over anemia.

In recent days, the bone marrow transplant treatment in India has become popular for the high success rate and affordable cost. To avail the cost-efficient treatment for sickle cell anemia, a number of patients come to India from different part of the world.
