Montana High School Honour Students Rewarded With School Visits to China

A group of honour students from Flathead High School, a learning institution in Montana, USA, were recently rewarded with a series of school visits to China as a way for the school to show appreciation for their academic efforts and good grades.

All in all, a total of twelve students and eight adults were granted the opportunity to visit Chinese capital Beijing, in a week-long trip they are sure to remember for the rest of their lives. The seven days spent overseas in the world’s most densely populated country gave these students and their chaperones the chance to get a first-hand taste of Chinese culture, food and customs — which is, after all, one of the main objectives of most school visits to China.

During their stay in the Chinese capital, the students were given the opportunity to indulge in all the typical tourist activities, along with a few more locally focused ones. Alongside the mandatory trips to the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and Summer Palace, the Flathead High School Honour Society also had the chance to share lunch with locals in a 'hotung’ (walled-in) neighbourhood. (They were shocked to find most residents had no piping and drew their water from a communal well.) The trip also included a visit to a local middle school (equivalent to the British preparatory school) where the students helped the children with their English lessons. Perhaps the highlight of the trip, however, was the visit to the Bird’s Nest National Stadium, which was filled with snow and turned into an impromptu sledding ring.

Honour students at Flathead High School have been travelling abroad as a reward for their grades for over a decade. 2015 is likely to see the children in this group — all of whom possess grade point averages of 3.5 or above — travel to sunny Spain, in what is sure to be another life-changing experience for these teenagers.
