Orlando, FL — June 12, 2015 — Turmeric is not just a kitchen ingredient that adds color and taste to dishes, but also a popular medicinal spice. Its use is believed to help fight a myriad of diseases, including the life-threatening ones. The good news is that it seems to offer benefits that are more than what many expect.

New research finds turmeric compounds are potentially helpful in alleviating injury from chemical weapons. They are believed to be an ideal natural intervention that can provide relief from the pain and suffering experienced by sulfur mustard-injured individuals.

“Turmeric has an active ingredient called curcumin, and it is believed to have very strong therapeutic benefits,” said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

An article titled “The Secret Casualties of Iraq’s Abandoned Chemical Weapons” was published recently by the New York Times. According to the report, troops were wounded by chemical weapons. One of the weapons was a vesicant chemical warfare agent called sulfur mustard, which causes huge and painful blisters on the lungs and skin exposed.

The 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention classified the agent as a Schedule 1 substance, with it being made only for chemical warfare. Sulfur mustard has a chemical cousin called nitrogen mustard that was developed and used for chemotherapy for certain blood cancers. In the Iran-Iraq War, over 100,000 Iranians were exposed to sulfur mustard. It is estimated that one-third of them are still suffering from side effects.

Pain-killers are often used to treat mustard gas burns. However, nowadays, researchers have identified some natural compounds, such as curcuminoids from turmeric, that are potential remedies for sulfur mustard exposure.

The Drug Research journal published a study that found the group who received the curcuminoids treatment experienced an improvement in the function of their lungs as well as with inflammation. Researchers concluded that curcuminoids are a well-tolerated and safe remedy for individuals who suffer from SM-induced chronic pulmonary complications. This is believed to be due to its ability to suppress systemic inflammation.

Another study by the British Journal of Nutrition found that the chronic skin itching induced by sulfur mustard could be alleviated with a gram of curcumin per day. The good news is that today, curcumin is widely available in the market.

An increasing number of people are using curcumin supplements to address a variety of medical conditions including inflammation-related diseases such as arthritis. Experts suggest that people should use curcumin supplements that contain a black pepper extract called BioPerine, which enhances nutrient absorption inside the body (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Extract-Vegetarian/dp/B00VSVKJ8I/).
