Orlando, FL — March 02, 2016 — Multiple myeloma takes place when the bone marrow plasma cells become cancerous. Tumors in the bone marrow form from plasma cells. There are pharmaceutical drugs available, but scientists are investigating on the therapeutic benefits of the spice called turmeric.

Research investigates the effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma. Individuals with a history of radiation therapy and older adults are thought to be more susceptible to multiple myeloma.

People who suffer from multiple myeloma usually experience pain in the back or bones, anemia, numbness of arms and legs, fatigue, fever, bleeding problems, or shortness of breath. Treatments of the condition include bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy, radiation, and medications. Complications include pneumonia, kidney failure, paralysis, or bone fractures.
“Turmeric is one of the medicinal spices that are widely used by many people nowadays,” said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.
Turmeric contains a phytochemical called curcumin, which has various therapeutic substances. Curcumin contains antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also thought to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

According to experts, curcumin has the potential to cause apoptosis, which pertains to cell death. It can also cause metastases, which is the spread of cancer to other organs.

In laboratory studies, researchers tried to investigate the effects of curcumin on prostate, skin, breast, colon, and other types of cancer cells. The NF-kappaB works by signaling the genes to manufacture damaging, inflammatory molecules such as TNF, COX-2, and IL-6.

Curcumin is believed to help inhibit the activation of NF-kappaB, and thus, suppress the inflammatory molecule proliferation. It is also thought to cause cell cycle arrest and cell suicide.

There hasn’t been any established study that demonstrated the beneficial effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma. However, early studies suggest that its chemopreventive and therapeutic properties could potentially be effective in the treatment of oral and pancreatic cancers.

In early clinical studies, it was revealed that curcumin could benefit multiple myeloma. It was found that when human multiple myeloma cells were treated with curcumin, it has helped stop the replication of and cause the death of the cells.

In recent studies, it was found that turmeric does not only kill multiple myeloma cells, but also enhances the efficacy of conventional cancer therapy. Scientists in China also found that turmeric has successfully decreased the proliferation of cancer cells.

Today, more and more people are using curcumin supplements. Many consumers of curcumin suffer from arthritis pain and inflammation. Curcumin is believed to be a safer alternative to pain relief medications (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00VSVKJ8I).
