The word ‘Lymphoma’ refers to a cancer of the lymphatic system. This cancer starts in lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. As lymphocyte is a part of connective tissue, the lymphoma can quickly metastasize, or spread, to different parts of the body and cancer can affect tissues and organs throughout the body. Lymphoma has a high chance to spread to the liver, bone marrow or lungs.

Though people of any age can be affected by lymphoma, there is a high rate of occurrence among children and young adults aged 15 – 24 years. As early cancer will be detected, the chances of success for recovery become high.

Lymphoma can mainly be grouped into two types: Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.  These types can again be divided into many subtypes.

Though there are no specific symptoms of the disease in an early stage; in advanced stages, people may experience swelling of the lymph nodes in different body parts like the neck, groin, abdomen, or armpits. The swellings are often painless or may become painful if the enlarged glands press on organs, bones, and other structures.

Some of the common symptoms of lymphoma are continuing fever without infection, fever, and chills, weight loss and reduced appetite, persistent fatigue or a lack of energy, persistent coughing, shortness of breath and so on.

Chemotherapy is one of the effective treatment methods for lymphoma treatment in India. The course of chemotherapy depends on the type of lymphoma the patient has and the stage of his cancer. If the treatment fails to cure the disease, there are other treatment procedures to follows, such as Biologic therapy, Antibody therapy, Radioimmunotherapy, Radiation therapy, Stem cell transplantation, Steroid therapy, and surgery.

There is no routine screening test for lymphoma; if a person has persistent viral symptoms, then doctors may ask to conduct blood tests and biopsies to check the presence of cancer. The doctors may also ask for confirmatory imaging scans, such as CT scan, MRI scan, PET scan, X-ray imaging of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis.

Accurate identification staging of the cancer is very much important to provide appropriate treatment to the patient.

With proper treatment, both types of lymphoma have a high chance to survive up to/more than 5 years.
