Orlando, FL — March 28, 2016 — High heels are the type of shoes that many women cannot live a day without. They are a fashion statement, and can make women look taller and more attractive. Unfortunately, using them doesn’t come without a price.

Years of using high heels may result in knee osteoarthritis and joint degeneration. There are various types of high heels such as wedges, stilettos, pumps, and kitten heels. While wearing any of these can make one appealing and sexy, it can potentially jeopardize one’s knee health.

One Iowa State University kinesiology master’s student conducted a new study. It was found that prolonged use of high heels and walking with its use can significantly contribute to joint degeneration and knee osteoarthritis.

“There are natural supplements such as glucosamine supplements believed to help strengthen joint health,” said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

Danielle Barkema is a student from the Iowa State University. She has completed her thesis research that aimed at determining the effects of high-heeled waking on forces acting on lower extremity joints.

She was assisted by Phil Martin, who was the Kinesiology professor and department chair. The study is presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB).

According to Barkema, it cannot be validated whether or not high-heeled walking could eventually cause osteoarthritis. However, individuals who wear high heels are found to be at a greater risk of osteoarthritis. She also added that the higher the height of the heel, the greater the risk.

The ISU researchers also added that heel height could change the walking characteristics of a person. This could pertain to the shorter stride lengths and slower speeds. As high heels get higher, there could also be an increase in the compression on the medial side or inside of the knee.

It has also been found that wearing high heels does not just cause lower extremity joint problems but also changes the body posture. It does so by altering the joint positions at the knee, ankle, hip, and trunk. This could result in a strain on the lower back.

Athletes are believed to be more likely to suffer from joint pain in the future due to the intense physical activity they are engaged in. However, many of them take protective measures such as glucosamine to repair damaged cartilage and improve their joint health.

Women who constantly wear high heels may also resort to the use of glucosamine supplements. The best supplements do not only contain glucosamine but also other therapeutic ingredients such as methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Supplement-2000mg-serving/dp/B0126ZF0B0/).
